Extra place races
An extra place is a bookmaker paying more places on a race than its standard place terms. Bookmakers advertise them as extra place offers.
What an extra place is worth
An extra place comes at the standard fraction or at a smaller one. At the standard fraction it adds a paying place and changes nothing else.
At a smaller fraction it is a trade. A 14-runner handicap normally pays three places at 1/4. A bookmaker paying four places at 1/5 instead, on a horse at 21.00 backed £5 each-way:
3 places at 1/4
Place price 6.00. The place part returns £30 in the first three, nothing in fourth.
4 places at 1/5
Place price 5.00. The place part returns £25 in the first four.
The extra place costs £5 when the horse finishes in the first three and adds £25 when it finishes fourth. The win part is unchanged.
