What are fractional odds?

8/1, 15/2, Evens. What the numbers mean, and how they map to decimal.

Reading a fraction

A fraction is profit over stake. 8/1 pays £8 profit for every £1 staked. Win, and £9 comes back: the £8 profit plus your £1 stake.

15/2 is the same idea. £2 staked wins £15 profit. Evens is 1/1: stake and profit match.

Decimal odds

Decimal odds are the total return per £1, stake included. 8/1 becomes 9.00. Evens becomes 2.00.

The conversion is one sum: add 1 to the fraction. 15/2 is 7.5, so 8.50.

Why bookmakers show fractions

Tradition. UK bookmakers grew up on fractional boards and most still default to them. Exchanges and most betting tools use decimal, because two decimal prices compare at a glance.
